STA Middle School Developmental Tennis Program

The Spearfish Tennis Association, Inc. is offering a middle school tennis program this fall for all Spearfish 6th, 7th, and 8th grade girls and boys. The girls practice in the fall and boys in the spring. Joe Doerges will be running the program with assistance from other Spearfish Tennis Association members.

This program is for any 6th, 7th, or 8th grade girl/boy in the Spearfish area. Since tennis is not an official middle school activity at Spearfish MS, any area MS girl/boy may participate in the program.

There is no cost to participate. T-shirts are available for $10 but not required.

School Physicals are required for 7th and 8th graders and recommended for 6th graders.

Practices are Monday through Friday from 3:30pm-5:15 at the MS tennis courts. Players are not required to attend all practices, but it is helpful for staffing purposes to know when your child will not be at practice.COVID-19 screening questions will be asked and temperaatures taken.

2020 middle school girls practices start August 17, 2020. 
Practices are 6:30am-8am Monday through Friday at the middle school tennis courts until school starts. Unless the high school team is out of town. Then practices are at the high school tennis courts.

So far tennis matches are schedules on Saturdays - August 22, September 5, 19, and 22. Starting at 9:00am and ending around 2:00pm.

We will have a parent/participant meeting at the high school courts on Sunday, August 16, at 6:30pm,weather permitting. Please bring your own lawn chairs.

Participants will need proper practice clothes, T-shirt, shorts with pockets, tennis shoes, water bottle, warm clothing for those cooler days. NO flip flops, jeans. We will NOTprovide water this year.

The Spearfish Tennis Association will provide tennis rackets or students may bring their own.

Players will learn:

  • basic tennis skills (footwork, grip, forehand, backhand, volley, serve, and overhead)
  • rules of the game
  • tennis etiquette
  • keeping score (regular, no-add, and tie-breaker)

Please download and complete the attached forms and return to the Middle School Office, bring to parent meeting, or to your first practice. This year we have added information and a waiver concerning COVID-19.
