Vision Mission History

The Brock Foundation, Inc. a 501(C)(3), reactivated in 2021 under the name Tennis on the Run Academy, to expand tennis and recreation for youth and adults alike. Our goal: to create tennis opportunities for youth in the Greater Cincinnati Area.

The program was created in memory of James and Genia Brock! James (Jack) Brock who was one of the first African Americans born in the village of Glendale, Ohio and whose skill and talent as a basketball & tennis player as well as Coach brought tennis to its diverse community at a time when class and race tended to segregate the town and greater northern Cincinnati area. Coach Brock was known as a mentor to youths in the community, and the site, Summit Park in Glendale, Ohio was one that welcomed all people to play. Brock hosted Arthur Ashe in 1969 at Summit Park, where the champion tennis professional graciously practiced with local tennis players.

Our goal is to give youth an opportunity to gain experience and play tennis at the elementary school level. Tennis on the Run Academy provides tennis instruction at local schools. We provide In-School and After-School Tennis Programs where students can participate in In-School during Physical Education classes and After-School once or twice weekly with help of local tennis coaches and high school volunteers.

With the success of our In-School, After-School and Structured Tennis at Recess (STAR) Programs, The Brock Foundation in the last three school years have served two thousand kids with tennis in our comprehensive school’s tennis programs. The schools we have partnered with to date are Glendale, Springdale, and Woodlawn Elementary Schools. Every student in the school was able to have fun and play tennis.

Tennis on the Run Academy partners with The Glendale Lyceum private club for fall access to tennis courts. We are fortunate to partner with Mercy Hospitals Health plex for access to winter indoor tennis courts. Queen City Racquet Club for sponsoring committed students to their Junior Program. Most kids in the program had never been on a tennis court let alone a clay tennis court in fall and indoor courts in the winter. With our new partnership at Springdale Recreation Center, we provided youth tennis classes this summer. We will add more classes for youth and adults this spring 2024.

Tony Brock brought the Foundation back to his hometown of Glendale in 2014, when he returned to take care of the aging Coach Brock, his father, who passed away in 2018. Not surprisingly, Coach Tony Brock is carrying on his father’s legacy, helping students from the area securing tennis scholarships to further their education.

It is also a goal of Tennis on the Run Academy to create a physical building for after-school tennis where students will not only get to play but, with help of volunteers, will receive mentorship, homework support and healthy snacks.

Tennis on the Run Academy is a non-profit organization helping to have influence in the Greater Cincinnati area.
