Tennis Center at Millersville Park Update

The Tennis Alliance was formed in 2013 to work with the county to develop an indoor/outdoor tennis facility that would deliver year-round affordable programming for all ages and abilities, addressing a dramatic need in Anne Arundel County for indoor courts and programming. Surrounding counties have 18 public indoor tennis facilities offering programs. Anne Arundel County has none.

Since 2016, the Tennis Center at Millersville Park project has been approved by the County Council. Construction was planned for 2022. $6.5 million in county funding has been approved for the tennis project.

November 2020: The County issued an RFP (Request for Proposal) to find a partner to share construction costs. (The county would build the infrastructure and outdoor courts at $6.5M; the private partner would build the indoor courts and clubhouse and operate the full facility.) Coppermine was selected to be the county's partner and awarded a lease that required approval from the County Council.

October 2021: The Council rejected the lease with Coppermine by a 4-3 vote. The county council did not reject the Tennis Center at Millersville Park project. The vote was limited to the lease.

February 2022: Executive Steuart Pittman has indicated that for the Fiscal Year 2023 budget (to be approved in June 2022) he plans to withdraw the $6.5M in funding for tennis and eliminate the Tennis Center at Millersville Park project by repurposing the site for multi-sport fields. $400,000 is proposed for tennis to find a new site and begin new studies.

There is continued support and a dramatic need for a public tennis center in Anne Arundel County. The Millersville site is critical to a timely resolution.

The Tennis Alliance remains a leader and advocate for a year-round home for tennis in Anne Arundel County.
