Girls Varsity - 2023 Results
2023 Regular Season Record: 7 - 18
August 19, 2023
The girls tennis team started the 2023 season at the Bob Pivec tennis courts. Team hosted Buffalo, Cretin Derham Hall and Hibbing. In the first round we competed against Buffalo and lost 6-1. Caityln Easton playing at 4th singles won her first varsity match ever as a 9th grader. Caityln was on the section team and is a 3 sport athlete who also plays Hockey and Lacrosse. There is no question she will do amazing things as a Coon Rapids Athlete. Gabbi Newton entering her 3rd season at 1st singles had a great match losing 7-5, 6-2. All of the doubles lost in straight sets but they competed extremely hard. In the next round we went up against Cretin which we lost 4-3. Caitlyn won her 2nd match as well as Gabbi at 1st singles. Morgan Syverson and Ashley Kivioja won their 1st match ever at 3rd singles. This is Ashley's 2nd year of tennis and she played solid in the doubles lineup. They won their match in the super tiebreaker. Melaine Lee lost her match in a super tiebreaker. She played so well and will be a major contributor to our team. The last round of the day we played Hibbing and lost 6-1. Gabbi won again at 1st singles and played great. Morgan and Ashley lost in 2 close sets. In our lineups we had 9 players who are multi-sport athletes and I am a firm believer we are only going to get better as the season goes along.

Tennis won their first match of the season against St. Paul Johnson an lost to Princeton. In Princeton we started playing out points much better and were in a better position to close out points. As we go along I am most confident with these players we will start winning more matches as they are working extremely hard in our practices and matches. Melaine Lee was down in the 2nd set and I suggested a couple of items which she tried and ended up winning her 2nd match of the day. Caitlyn was down 5-1 in the 1st set and ended up winning in a tiebreaker. She losted in the super tiebreaker but played so smart. We have 3 matches on Saturday and I can not wait to see how we do based on how hard they hit today in practice.

Tennis team competed at Big Lake this past Saturday winning 2 and losing 1 match. In the 1st round we went up against Sartell and lost 6-1. Gabi Newton at 1st lost in the 3rd set super tiebreaker 10-8 and Avery Anderson also lost in a super 15-13. Catilyn Easton won the only match in this match. All of the doubles lost in straight sets but they worked really hard in their match. 2nd round we competed against Sauk Rapids winning 5-2. All of the singles won as well as 2nd doubles of Casey Beck and Adrain Hayden won in 3 sets. Last round of the day beat Big Lake 4-3. All of the singles won in straight sets. 1st doubles started attacking the net and lost in 3 sets super proud of staying with the plan. Casey and Adrian lost in 2 tiebreakers which was an extremely close match. Catilyn Easton (9th grade) won all of her matches at 4 singles. Gabi (11th grade) and Avery (8th grade) won 2 matches and the match they lost was in the super tiebreaker. Avery had 3 times where she was having a rally where she hit her forehand using her left hand to win the point (Avery is right handed - extremely athletic to do this shot 3 times in a match). I am so excited with this team this year because they are working extremely hard and we are improving. We compete against Totino Grace on Tuesday and Andover on Wednesday at the Bob Pivec tennis courts.

The girls tennis team competed against Totino Grace and Andover last Tuesday and Wednesday. We lost to Totino Grace 5-2, winning at 2nd singles and 2nd doubles. Gabi Newton played a great match at 1st singles losing 6-4, 6-2. On Wednesday we went up against Andover and won 4-3. It was a match of determination. We were down 3-1 with Avery Anderson winning in straight sets at 3rd singles. Caitlyn Easton at 4th singles; Casey and Adrian at 2nd doubles and Natalie and Ashley 3rd doubles all needed to win their 3rd sets. At the start of their 3rd sets I told them that we were down 3-1 and all spots needed to win to give us a chance to secure the win. I suggested a couple of items to try in the 3rd set and sure enough it worked for them. What match and day. The following day there were 27 players, players and coaches who went to US Open in New York to watch tennis and tour New York City. Our players were able to get pictures and autographs with Ben Shelton and Taylor Townsend. Both having a mazing US Open tournament. Tomorrow we added a match with Irondale.

The tennis team lost 2 matches this week against Spring Lake Park and Centennial. In both matches we lost 7-0. The players played pretty good against Centennial. All spots were competitive in at least one set. What we need to do is trust the process even when losing. We have gotten better since August 14th which was the start of the season. We are hosting 3 teams tomorrow at the Bob Pivec tennis courts. Please see the attachments for results.

Tennis team lost 3 matches in a 4 team tournament this past weekend. We competed against Delano, St. Francis and Totino Grace. In the first match which I thought was the toughest match of the day we played the best against Delano. We lost several clost matches in the singles lineup. We were redirecting the ball and using all of our shots in moving our opponents around. We came up short in close points. Against St. Francis we lost 7-0. It seemed like a few players had some steam taken out from the Delano match. In the last round we competed against Totino Grace which we lost 5-0 and played an all doubles match since we competed against them earlier this year. Results are as follows:

This past week the tennis team competed against Anoka and Champlin Park. Last Tuesday we beat Anoka 5-2 with all singles spots winning in straight sets as well as 1st doubles. 2nd doubles lost in 3 sets. It is great to watch singles players improving on their game by moving the ball around on the court. Against Champlin Park we lost 7-0 with Gabi Newton losing in straight sets but competed for almost 2 hours. Section seeding is on 10/1 with team sections on 10/3. We have one last regular tennis match against Rogers on Tuesday. Results are as follows:

Last week the tennis team lost to Rogers 7-0. All points were lost in straight sets. On Tuesday we host OSeeo at the Bob Pivec Courts. I am excited that for section play we will be in full strength. We will have Avery Anderson back and Macie Ruddy ankle is feeling better as she missed the Champlin Park match. If we win on Tuesday we go to Champlin Park to play.

Last week the tennis team competed in tennis sections. On Tuesday we beat Osseo 5-2. It was the first time since the first week in September. Gabi, Avery and Caitlin won in singles in straight sets. Casey and Adrian also won in straight sets. Natalie and Ashley won in an exciting 3 sets to close out the win. On Wednesday we competed against Champlin Park where we lost 7-0 but we played so much better. We played Champlin Park 2 week ago. We only won 11 games and this past match we won 29 games. As a coach you are hoping that as the season goes on they are getting better and most certainly we did. The season as a whole was a learning season. Our singles lineup consisted of all under class players. 1st singles Gabi Newton (11); 2nd singles Melaine Lee (10); Avery Anderson (8); Caitlin Easton (9). Our first doubles team for most of the season was Macie Ruddy (11) and Abby Cimenski (11). Seniors who contributed quite a bit on Varsity were Adrian Hayden, Casy Beck, Natalie Hannson and Ashley Kivioja. Tennis team looks promising for next year. Results are as follows:
