2024 Garden City Singles Championships (Aug. 17-18) 

DESCRIPTION:

Welcome! The Garden City Championships is a level-based regional UTR singles championships for advanced and high performance players. The City of Newton Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture and The Friends of Newton Tennis, Inc (a USTA Community Tennis Association) are the organizers. Player and sponsorship fees are used to repair and maintain 65 municipal courts in Newton.

**IMPORTANT please follow the X (aka Twitter) account @Gardencityseries for match progress, scoring, and logistical updates. This is the best form of communication to know when you are playing, if there is a delay, and anything else relevant.

DETAILS:

- Tournament fee ($75/player)

- Prize Money - $750 winner, $250 runner up

- Organized for high performance players (UTR 9.0+ and higher rating)

- 32-player draw - If oversubscribed, a qualifier round will be held on Friday, August 15, at Newton North High School

- This is an OPEN Co-Ed event. Men and Women can play.

- Best 2 out of 3 sets, NO-AD, 10 point tie break in lieu of a third set.

- Finals will be played out 2 out of 3 full sets

- Consolation draw for competitors who don't win their Round of 32 matches

- 2 matches guarantee Rules and Regulation:

- Tournament directors reserve the right to adjust draws based on registration and UTRs.

- No refunds, 7-days prior to event

- Official start time and date is 8:30 AM Saturday, Aug 17

- All finals will be held on Sunday, Aug. 17.

- Rain date is Sunday, Aug. 18, to be announced (with 24-hour notice)

- If Championships are cancelled due to inclement weather, fees will apply to 2025 Singles Championships or to 2024 Garden City Doubles Championships (Sept. 7 & 8).

The purpose of Garden City tournaments is to create competitive level-based matches to enhance a player’s game and provide opportunities to compete, while promoting, growing, and developing the game of tennis. While winning is the ultimate goal, players are expected to remain respectful towards their opponents and abide by the following values:

1) display integrity and make decisions with principles of ethical behavior; fair line calls, sportsmanship, and adhering to the rules of the game

2) respect opponents and treat them with dignity, impervious to the score of the match or other external factors that may influence decisions, judgements, and behaviors Failure to comply will result in termination from the tournament. The tournament is held in memory of isadore Singer, who was an avid tennis player, a distinguished Math professor at MIT and a Newton resident.

DESCRIPTION

Garden City Doubles Championships is back for the third consecutive year in a row! This UTR community level-based tournament is held in memory of Isadore Singer, MIT math professor, avid tennis player and Newton resident.

Who: - Top ranked High School Girls and Boys Players - D3 and D1 College Men and Women players - Highly rated adult players

Format: Single set (6 game), No-Ad, 7 point tie-break at 5-5

Details:

- Tournament fee taken as a pair ($100/pair, $50/player)

- Prize Money: UTR 9+ Draw Finalists Share $1,500 in cash and gift cards

- All players are guaranteed multiple matches

- Organized by Level-based Play

- "Coed" doubles refers to any combination of men-men, women-women and mixed pairs

- Universal Tennis Rating points earned - Registration limited to first 16 teams per draw/division

- Registration open to players of any age

- Tournament reserves right to adjust draws based on registration

- Individual Players (matched prior to August 24)

- Winners of 7.0+ Advanced and Women's 7.5+ College draw promoted to 9.0+ high performance draw

- Rain dates are either Saturday and Sunday (with 24-hour notice).

- No refunds after Sept. 1, 2024

2024 Garden City Doubles Championships (Sept. 14-15)

- Novice and Intermediate 

DESCRIPTION

City of Newton Parks, Recreation and Culture Department and The Friends of Newton Tennis are holding a level-based community doubles tournament for beginners to high-performance players.

DETAILS:

- Tournament fee taken as a pair ($100/pair, $50/player)

- Draws combine any male and female doubles combinations (aka Co-ed) based on playing level

- Open to Newton residents and non-resident

- Players guaranteed three matches plus a final - Each draw planned to last three hours

- Registration limited to 16 teams per draw/division

- Tournament reserves right to establish and place players in leveled draws

- Community event to celebrate lifelong tennis - ages 8 and 80+

- No refunds after registration closes on September 10 at 12 PM
