USTA Southwest native Alex Lawson, son of Limitless Co-Director Tracy Lawson, earned a main draw Men's Doubles Wildcard into the 2021 US Open this year, with partner Rob Galloway of Greenville, South Carolina. Galloway and Lawson won their first round match 6-1, 6-3 against Fererico Coria of Argentina and Gianluca Mager of Italy, in a match that started Wednesday, September 2 on the inconic Court 17 stadium at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center and finished Thursday, September 3, after heavy rains and flooding hit New York. Galloway and Lawson fell in the second round to the 10 seed, Wesley Koolhof and Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands in a close 6-3, 7-6 (4) match.
Lawson grew up in Tempe, where he attended Corona Del Sol High School. During his high school tennis career, Lawson won four Arizona Tennis State Titles. He went on to play college tennis at the University of Notre Dame where he finished his career as an All-American after reaching the semis of the NCAA Men's Doubles tournament.
"Obviously, when you're a little kid you're like, 'I want to be number one in the world'," Lawson said, "But it's not really a realistic thing. My goal was always just kind of college tennis. That's just kind of where I saw it progressing."
Since college, Lawson has traveled the world playing tennis, finally breaking through to a major slam this year.
"As far as what I would tell my [younger] self, 'There's no point in really limiting yourself as far as what you're shooting for."
Alex and Rob play next week in Cary, North Carolina at the Atlantic Tire Championships.
