The Journey for an affordable, public, covered tennis facility in our community

Good afternoon Town Council and County Commissioners,

I am grateful to have had the opportunity to speak with you this afternoon on behalf of the Teton County Community Tennis Association.

Our board is excited to reconnect with you as we want to keep you updated on our continuing efforts to create an affordable, public, covered tennis facility in our community. Our petition is up to 750 supportive community members for this idea. Last spring, the P&R advisory board unanimously gave us their support of the concept.

As many of you know from prior communication, we have been in conversation with both MIke Hansen from TCSD and Steve Ashworth from P&R to determine what information they need from us to make this dream a reality. Upon their request, we completed an operations plan with the professional support of the United States Tennis Association and our Wyoming State Executive Director. Our first choice of locations for this facility would be covering the existing tennis courts at the high school.

This past Friday, Dec 2nd, members of our board, including Peg Connor the ED for USTA WY met with Mike Hansen and Jason Huggins with TCSD and Steve Ashworth with P&R. We arrived at a path to move forward with a 3 way partnership. In the next few months, we’ll be joining Steve Ashworth presenting what we see as our best option to achieve this goal, and we'll be seeking your input and ultimately your approval for next steps. There is still more work to be done, but we are glad to be moving forward.

We look forward to resuming this conversation with you all and are excited to share more in the months to come.

As witnessed by the boom in local tennis play this past summer, the love of tennis is shared across demographics in our county. For the first time in over 10 years, passionate tennis playing volunteers were able to help organize an adult weekly mixer as well as the creation of 4 competitive league teams - 2 mens and 2 womens. The Teton Pines teams earned a spot at Sectionals in Las Vegas representing WY a few weeks ago. The 2nd men's team, town folks, received a wildcard and also competed. The Parks and Rec summer tennis programs for youth were also booked fully with waiting lists and great fun was had by all! In addition, the high school tennis program had 24 players and won the state title. Parks and Rec's dedication to tennis in our community, especially for the youth, was recognized on the State/Intermountain level as the Organization of the Year. I too accepted an award from them for my volunteer work teaching and sharing a love for tennis.

The TCCTA, USTA national, and the Wyoming USTA continue to be dedicated to providing a year round tennis facility for our community.

Please reach out to me if you would like more information. Many thanks for your time on behalf of the TCCTA.

All the best,
Diane McGee & the TCCTA Board
